Te Kanawa, a young Waikato chief, set out on a kiwi hunting expedition and heard a Patupaiarehe (beings travelling through the forest singing and talking). As a way of getting rid of the people he put a Tiki, an ear pendant and a shark tooth on a stick for the Patupaiarehe to take as a spirit gift. The ornaments were left untouched but their shadow was passed around. The patupaiarehe had gone and they had accepted the spirit gift of Te Kanawa. They had come in friendship and they had gone.
