One day Hatupatu and his brothers went hunting. Hatupatu did not return and his father guessed he was dead. He went down to the lake shore and prayed to Tane Mahuta to bring Hatupatu back to life. He was brought back to life by sandflies. Soon after he was chased by a birdwoman named Kurangaituku. The only way he could stop her was to kill her.
